The beginning - Script / idea
The process of script writing is a tedious one and is even harder when 4 creative minds need to come together and zero in on one idea. It was during this tryst we realized, that right there, we had a core idea, important to all 4 of us ; The struggle that is the creative process.
Within this space, we realized that we would like to talk about the need for balance or the lack of it.
We were trying to find answers to questions like-
Where does an artist draw the line between giving up her soul / space / time completely for her work. Do you create good art only when you do this?
Does this mean you cannot have a ´life´
What is the importance of balance?
Will you ever be happy with your work unless you truly put a part of yourself in it?
(truly deep and troubling questions we must admit)
This made us realize that the questions we were probing had no particular answer and maybe that was the point, to pose these questions, without making a feeble attempt to answer them.
The first Story
We started out with the idea of a female artist (made completely from threads and cloth) discovers that a thread from her body has gotten mixed with her work, making it better. She is torn between wanting to keep herself intact at the same time she loves that her work is getting better with every stitch. Eventually she struggles with this dilemma, taking threads from different parts of her body.
At this point, we reached a dead end. We had no clue as to how to solve her dilemma! And what it could imply, as a conclusive message / sentiment to end the film with.
After speaking to one of our teaches, we decided to simplify this story down to its basic components, a character and the process of creating something but at the same time losing yourself in the process.
This led us to our final script idea.
A character who is made out of threads is held by a string in the middle of an isolated
platform, and is accustomed to playing only one sound with the string that holds her. In an attempt to
reach a new sound she hears, she embarks on a journey of discovery and transformation with the help of
her own strings.
As the story was really minimal now in terms of character and set, we had to be conscious about things like body langauge and the exact actions that the character was doing. This would be handled in the story boarding stage which we started once we had our script.
