Shoot Organization
We were done with our script, our story board and shot breakdown, making the puppet and the set! Now it was time to shoot! But before that we had to do one very important task, to organize a shoot schedule and make a shoot plan.
There were two ways to go about organizing this. First, we organized the shots based on their difficulty; 1 = easy, 2 = Medium, 3 = Difficult.
We were told by our teacher to plan the shoot in such a way that we do the ´medium´ shots first, then the difficult ones and then easy ones in the end.
Also looking at our tight schedule, we realized we probably needed to shoot some shots parallely. Thus we needed a new system to divide our shots. Shots that needed to be shot in our main set (with the pillars and all) and shots that could be shot without it, simply against a plain black background.
There were many shots of the threads that didn´t really need the pillars or the puppet, many of those shots were done in our ´side´set. Also shots that involved the ´big hands´were mostly shot on this set.
Somewhere in the middle of May, we realized that we were running quite behind on the schedule and would have to relook this ´hierarchy´ of shots. At this point, we chose to pick out shots that were absolutely important to the story, as in, shots without which the story would make no sense. And started animating in that order of importance. At some point, we even had to edit the story board and change the order of certain shots so as to make sure that we finish the shoot as per our plan. Eventually we managed to cover all the shots we needed and even did a few extra shots that we thought would help the storytelling. Hoorah!
