Puppet trials

Once the character design was done, we started working on making the puppet. The first version, although not completely ´real´ in proportions, seemed too ´normal´ The feedback we received was that it wasn´t ´memorable´enough which we agreed with. The idea was to make the puppet unique and more interesting.

With this in mind, we moved on to the next version of the puppet. We tried to make smaller dummy models of the puppet to experiment with body shapes and forms. it was also important that the puppet had a nice silhouette, as our set was very minimal and the puppet would often be against a black background.

We decided to make the legs and hands much longer and thinner than usual. This already made the puppet more memorable and distinct. Although, we weren´t completely happy with the shape of the puppet´s torso. With this in mind, we moved onto the next version.

We kept the long arms and legs but changed the shape of the torso, so as to not make the shoulders look so box like.

Now it was time to cover the body of the puppet. As the character was made completely out of threads, we didn´t have to think much about the material for the body. We always knew that we wanted the puppet to be grey, hence we did a lot of trials with different shades of grey.

Although, when we tried placing the puppet in the set, we realized that the color pallet was too monochromatic. The puppet needed some colour on the outside to make it stand out against the grey set and the black background. Hence we chose to use a little bit of yellow thread on the outside as well.
